Ill Bro Donald Saidla, 2017 Class Honoree
Our Valley of Grand Rapids October 2017 Class Honoree, is Ill Bro Donald C. Saidla 33rd Degree. In sum, Ill Bro Don Is a Mason’s…. Mason. He was raised, in 1978, in Mattawan Lodge No. 268. Ill Bro Don advanced through the Officer Line of Blue Lodge and became Worshipful Master in 1982. He served as Secretary of Mattawan Lodge for more than 30 years. He was honored as Mason of the Year 4 times. To date, Ill Bro Don remains an active Blue Lodge Freemason at Mattawan Lodge and his advice and counsel are sought out and valued by his Brothers. If Ill Bro Don saw a need, he filled it. No job was too small. He is a devoted Freemason.
In 1981, Ill Bro Don joined the Valley of Grand Rapids Scottish Rite. He regards the Scottish Rite experience as one of the most significant parts of his Masonic life. He made lifelong friends and connections. Ill Bro Don advanced through the Rose Croix line, holding all offices in the line and serving as Most Wise Master of the Rose Croix in 1992. He also served on the Valley of Grand Rapids Scottish Rite Board of Trustees, 3 of those years as Vice President.
In October of 1995, Ill Bro Don was coroneted an 33rd Degree, Honorary Member of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He regards this as one of the highest honors he has received in Freemasonry.
For those who know Ill Bro Don, he is a lover of Ritual. Over the years he and participated in the 14th, 30th, and 32nd Degrees. Ill Bro Don loves the 18th Degree and its Ritual and we are fortunate he will exemplify the Story of the Cross in the 18th Degree in this reunion. This will be a particular honor for him, for the Brothers in the Rose Croix and for us at the Reunion.
Ill Bro Don is also a member of Paw Paw Chapter RAM #34, Tall Cedars, the Kalamazoo Masonic Retiree Club and District 11 PM Club.
Ill Bro Don retired as a die maker from General Motors. He spent significant time in civic involvement, putting his Freemasonry in action, assisting with Cub Scouts, Little League, Rocket Football and Mattawan Athletic Boosters. Due to Don and Sheron’s efforts thousands of kids in the Mattawan School District have been assisted.
He lives in Mattawan with the love of his life, Sheron. We cannot say enough about Sheron she is just an outstanding woman, wife and mother. Don and Sheron have been married 58 years. They had four children: Brenda, and her husband Ken; Donald and his wife, Beth; Brian who is deceased; and Brent and his wife, Amy. Don and Sheron have six Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren. He is devoted to his family.
